Big Ray - History

The Begining

I went on Holiday to the US after the recording of what was supposed to be Sink's next record. Ed and I hadn't been seeing eye to eye for sometime. I was having difficulty in dealing with Ed's new found enthusiasm for Country music and Ed wasn't enjoying my attempts to improve his songs by changing parts and adding my bits. When I returned I received a "Dear John" letter and found Sink had split.

A new band had been formed called Big Ray and the Sink LP would be released under this new name. Oh yes and one minor point, I wasn't in the band. Rather than being distraught, I was kind of relieved. Ed and I hadn't been friends for awhile but had become business partners.

Ed and I started getting along again, we both loved the new album and Big Ray still needed a Bass Player. In the meantime I had become folically challanged and in an attempt to grow old gracefully, cut my hair. My sister Melinda makes "interesting latex and leather wear" and I got a pair of trousers for Christmas. So with a bald head and leather pants I was back in tha saddle and ready to rock.

The Middle

It was good. Gone were the days of being straight edge. During the French Tour I discovered a taste for the fine Red Wines of France.

I wouldn't say life was less glamorous in Big Ray but I did a peel session. No not a John Peel session, a potato peeling session (Embarrassingly I'd worn my leather pants) We completely freaked the French out with our Baked Beans from England. The sauce beans are covered in is mostly sugar, well what do they expect us to use, salt! Well actually yes (goddamn peasants, back off Brussels, mustard is yellow!!)

The End

Monday April 5th 1993. They say bad things come in three's. Well shit comes in buckets.

Love life takes a turn for the worse.
City Slang our record label decide to terminate our contact and not let us record the new album
Then the news arrived that Kermack had collapsed and been rushed to hospital. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour. After an operation, followed by pneumonia, he died of heart failure.

It took some time to realise but that was the day I had had enough. I finally decided to hang up the Bass and try this "having a job thing" and actually quite enjoyed it. (okay so it didn't stay hung up for long!)
